What is self-confidence?

Etymologically, the word confidence means “To Trust”. In other words, self-confidence means having trust in yourself. It is believed that you can do it. Zig Ziglar said, “You are the only person on earth who can use your ability”. If you don’t believe and trust in your abilities those abilities won’t manifest. It is how you view yourself (your opinion about yourself). Nobody is born with limitless self-confidence, If someone appears to have incredible self-confidence, it’s because he or she has developed it over a period of time. Types of self-confidence

Traditionally there are three(3) types of self-confidence.

1. Low self-confidence: This happens when you doubt yourself and your abilities. it is the type of self-confidence you would love to avoid.

2. Optimal self-confidence: This is the type you would want to have. Where you feel good about yourself and your abilities.

3. Overconfidence: Sometimes overconfidence is considered arrogance and it arises mostly when you overestimate your abilities or underestimate the tasks ahead of you.

Signs of low self-confidence

A person with low self-confidence is likely to think negatively about his or her value and feelings of self-worth. Knowledge of these signs helps you to know when you need to build self-confidence. Some general signs of low self-esteem include:

1. Being afraid to make mistakes. Joyce’s brothers said, “You need to give yourself permission to become human”. Mistakes are part of human life and through mistake is how we learn.

2. Being scared to speak among others.

3. When you become vulnerable, it is a sign that your self-confidence has dropped.

4. When you begin to compare yourself with others. You are unique in your way, why the comparison? Stay in your lane. Comparison kills creativity and joy.” Brene Brown.

5. When you begin to doubt your strength and ability.

6. When you begin to see yourself as inferior to others.

How to overcome low self-confidence

1. You have to, first of all, accept yourself for who you are. That is the first step to take.

2. Believe in yourself is a crucial step in overcoming low self-confidence and building self-esteem.

3. Have in mind that what matters is how you see yourself (self-image).

4. See yourself as unique among others.

5. Take a bold step and do what people think you cannot do.

6. Go to the mirror every morning and tell yourself that you are amazing, that you can do it.

How To Build Your Self-confidence

The following tips will help you build your self-confidence and self-esteem.

Avoid Negativity and welcome Positivity

This is the time to truly assess your inner circle, including friends and loved ones. I know this is a difficult one, but it’s time to truly consider staying away from those individuals who put you down and shred your confidence. Be positive, regardless of whether you’re not feeling it quite yet. Put some positive enthusiasm into your interactions with others and hit the ground running.  Avoid negativity is a necessary step if you want to build self-confidence.

Acknowledge And Accept Your imperfections 

Perfectionism is just a component used to inflict pain on yourself. Perfection is neither a possibility nor a need. No one has ever been perfect and no one actually will be. Rather than seeking to achieve perfection, you can always attempt to do your best. Then, you can learn from the experience and endeavor to do more better next time.

Challenge Your Inner Criticism

A solid measure of self-criticism is fine, however, when it starts to negatively affect your daily life, it’s an ideal opportunity to replace self-criticism with affirmation. When your voice inside tells you that you’re incapable, inferior, or at the edge of failure, react with phrases like I can do this, or, I am equipped for achieving this task. You can also ask yourself things like, Why do I believe I will fail? Are the worries valid or are they fabricated because of a low feeling of ability?

Appreciate the things in your life 

Appreciating the good things in your life is another great way to build self-esteem. Tragically, we humans find it unimaginably easy to find the negative in our lives. When you appreciate the positive things in your life, you don’t just identify the things that you like; you take a second to focus on how your life is better and good as a result of them.

Practice thankfulness each day and you will take out negativity from your life. You are not making an effort to create delusions about how astonishing and wonderful your life is; you just want to develop a more sensibly hopeful view whereby you can recognize and appreciate the positive things in your life.

To be more joyful with your life and build self-confidence, you don’t necessarily have to improve your life. You just need to start seeing the positive things in your life and start appreciating them.

Carry on With a Healthy Lifestyle

Great hygiene, dressing properly, eating well, and exercising are things that can help you boost your self-confidence. When you’re clean, healthy, and sharp-looking, you are substantially more likely to feel better about yourself. Exercise and an appropriate diet will boost sound hormones and give you a better sense of self-worth.

Be prepared

Learn everything you need to know about your field, work, presentation, etc. Whatever you set your mind to do. If you are prepared and have the information to back it up, your self-confidence will soar.

Try Not to Take Things Too Seriously

Some of the time probably the main reason a person battles with low self-confidence is because they take life too seriously. It’s essential to be able to laugh at life and even at your own mistakes and disappointments. On occasion, we can shrink easily under someone else’s teasing or criticism, but when we react lightheartedly it doesn’t have to drag us down. Our self-esteem isn’t wrapped up in one moment of shame.

Speak to yourself

You will never feel confident if you have negative comments in your mind that you are not good. Consider your personality and how your self-confidence might affect it. See yourself as your best friend and cheer yourself as you would do to your best friend. This will go a long in helping you build self-esteem.
